Edgar Degas, French Impressionist Artist, 1834-1917 Edgar wanted to be an artist from a young age. At first he painted traditional subjects, including portraits and grand historical scenes but Degas wanted to experiment. Wanting to try new styles of painting, he began meeting with other artists who thought the same way. They talked about painting ordinary, everyday scenes and exploring light and color.
